Do you have a favorite author? Who is it? Why do you like them? What's their style of writing like?
I've asked myself this question lately because as a writer, what we read really influences our tone and quality of writing. I realized that a lot of my favorite authors are only my favorite because they wrote one book/series that I liked, and I stuck to that. Well, now, I believe that a truly good author writes great book after great book. This frame of thinking let me actually think about authors I truly respect and admire, and here's where I share my thoughts with you!
Stephen King
I'm sure I've mentioned him before, and it probably won't be the last time I do either. Stephen King is known to be a masterful writer, and although not every book is for everyone, I've built up a collection of his books, and to me, all of them are fantastic. The way that he weaves stories is phenomenal, and his characters are full of flaws and tragic backgrounds. I love the way he can bring the supernatural into a story, in a way that is almost too real.
The books that I've read by Stephen King include: It, The Outsider, The Institute, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, Pet Sematary, The Shining, The Mist
Mary Burton
For me, Mary Burton is the queen of small-town murders mixed with hardcore detectives and unsuspected romance. If you like this trio as much as I do, you'll love her! She really makes it easy to follow the investigations that happen in her books, and for me, it's an added bonus that there is romance included in the mystery.
The books that I've read by Mary Burton include: Hide and Seek, Don't Look Now, Burn You Twice, I'll Never Let You Go, The Seventh Victim, Senseless, Never Look Back
Dean Koontz
Reading Dean Koontz happened by chance, and wow! His Nameless series was a very quick read, and actually very entertaining/mysterious! I absolutely loved reading about a character whose past was a mystery to himself. It was also so interesting to see his process, and how he interacted with different people on his different missions. If you have the chance, check out their books!
The books that I've read by Dean Koontz include: In the Heart of the Fire, Photographing the Dead, The Praying Mantis Bride, Red Rain, The Mercy of Snakes, Memories of Tomorrow
As you can tell from these picks, I am an avid reader of thrillers and horror. Nowadays I've been reading a lot more romance, but thrillers will still always have my heart.
