Good afternoon lovely readers and writers!
Today I want to talk about my writing process. Every author/writer reaches a point where their writing style changes. This can be for many reasons, but recently my writing style has changed in a way that intrigues me. Let's discuss it!
I've been squeezing small writing sessions between work, chores, and other obligations. Time is a tool some use to their advantage, aka timed writing sessions. This technique allows the writer to go non-stop until the clock runs out, which forces the writer not to think about technicalities.
I've been doing something similar to this technique but without writing non-stop. Instead, I start writing in the middle of a story.
What I, and many other authors, like about the middle of the story, is that's where the action is. The beginning of a story is meant to introduce the reader to the story. This includes characters, settings, and rules. It's integral for any story but not always the most fun to develop. The middle is often where the meat of the story is. This is where there's action, the development of relationships, and tension.
I've found writing about these moments, however small, is much more entertaining than writing a beginning. When I have the time, I write that small moment. I believe this can be a useful technique for other writers who don't have time!
Writing this way allows me to come back to it later. When I get home, I'll copy down what I wrote (I like to handwrite these short stories first) onto my computer, and then start editing and adding notes about what the beginning could look like. For example, if I write a scene with two characters having a moment, I can think about how they met, and what led them to that moment.
In the coming weeks, I'll write about the benefits of starting at the beginning versus starting somewhere else in your story!
