Monthly Book Roundup: July 24

We are now done with the first quarter of the year! Can you believe how fast 2024 is passing by already? Fortunately, I pulled myself out of a recent slump to read, so here are all the books I've read this month, including my reviews (spoiler-free)!

  • Black Sight City by Jo Denning ()

  • ️What Did You Do? By Jeneane O’Riley (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

  • Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

  • Veil of Fate by Jinapher J. Hoffman (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

  • Heir of Fate by Jinapher J. Hoffman (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Black Sight City (Book 3 of 3) by Jo Denning (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Book Summary: Saoirse is finally attempting to learn and control her powers, with the help of her not-so-human boyfriend Dr. Emrys Somerland. They are trying to make it work, even though Dr. Somerland keeps secrets, and Saoirse cannot seem to stop drinking and lying to her family.

Their relationship is tangled, and messy, but it gets even messier when Saoirse starts questioning who Emrys is.

What Emrys is.

My Review: *I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review*

A good, short read.

I’ve followed this series since book 1 and enjoy the refreshing take on detectives and fantasy. This book focused on Saoirse and Emrys, but the story seemed to unravel after. Black Sight City goes more into the lore, but the book didn’t move as dramatically as the first two. It reads more like a romance, with more drama than physical action.

Overall, this was an exciting read, I’m curious how many more books we have left in this series!

What Did You Do? (Book 2 of 3) by Jeneane O’Riley (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Book Summary: Caly has finally earned her spot.

After seducing and killing Mendax, who stays on her mind long after, she is ready to take her place beside Prince Aurelius of the Seelie Court.

Except she is given an impossible decision to make, and her deceased lover may not be dead after all.

My Review: Enjoyable to a fault, but not what I expected.

I will say, I expected a little more from this book. I loved the first one, which had the enemies-to-lovers tension, and a plot twist that got my attention and left me waiting eagerly for the next book. This book, in retrospect, is a lot more about the testosterone of two men who won’t take no for an answer. I did enjoy some parts of the book, but after the first one knocked the ball out of the park, I was left disappointed for the most part.

Rhapsodic (Book 1 of 3) by Laura Thalassa (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Book Summary: Callypso is cursed with a bracelet, a reminder.

A siren with her life mostly figured out, Callypso has the job, the boyfriend, and the power to control others. But she is still bound to The Bargainer, the man who can get you anything for a price. And she has asked for many things.

So when The Bargainer is suddenly in her home, asking for repayment, her past comes rushing back . . . and her feelings.

My Review: One of my favorite books of the year!

Sprinkle fantasy, lust, and a love story together, and you will get the perfect recipe, THIS BOOK. Everything I love about fantasy is wrapped into a neat package! I loved this book, and I tell no lie when I say I was giggling and kicking my feet. The Bargainer is the epitome of the morally gray character. He is badass, and honestly very likable throughout the whole book. I also love how Callie is a strong FMC with a complex backstory.

The Bargainer is now the new standard and no one can tell me otherwise.

Veil of Fate (Book 1 of 3) by Jinapher J. Hoffman (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Book Summary: Zora vowed to stop at nothing to find her brother.

With no other family, Zora has become the only one she can rely on. Through her job as an assassin, she aims to get closer to her brother, but instead finds herself the subject of a man's eye.

But he is no regular man.

He is a Fate.

My Review: I NEED MORE

At first, I was a little skeptical about this book. The beginning throws you into the universe, and it takes a moment to adjust to the story and where it’s going, but I was impressed by the end. I’m the kind of person who enjoys being thrown into the universe so I can play detective and look for context clues.

I cannot believe the book finished like that, I was so into it! I want to know what happens next so badly! I haven’t been this eager to get into a sequel in a while but I’m looking forward to it!

Heir of Fate (Book 2 of 3) by Jinapher J. Hoffman (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Book Summary: Zora has found her brother, but at what cost?

Now she's kept prisoner by no other, Christen is on his side, and her best friend is dead. Now, she has to figure out where her alliances lie when she becomes queen. The problem is, that her kingdom is falling, and her love for Christen is not.

My Review: so interesting, and getting better

Get ready for enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers XD This book took a turn, but in a good way! There is entirely too much angst for my heart to handle between the MCs but I am also a sucker for tension. And the ending was so intriguing! There may be a few plot holes here and there and unexplained phenomena, but this book is exciting. Can’t wait to find out more about the fates and their powers in the next one!

These are all the books I've read in July. I hope you’re all getting closer to your reading goals!

Happy Saturday!
