On Writing Conflict

As writers, we never want our characters to experience hardships. For the sake of the plot, however, our characters have to go through conflict to make the story interesting. If you're having trouble writing conflict into your book, here are some quick tips and tricks to help you get writing!

First, you need to identify what type of conflict your character is going through. There are seven types of conflict that can drive a story forward, and they can be divided into two categories. Internal conflicts, and external conflicts.

Internal Conflicts

  • character vs. self

  • character vs. destiny

External Conflicts

  • character vs. society

  • character vs. nature

  • character vs. technology

  • character vs. character

Once you've identified which conflict you want to include in your book, next is identifying what your character wants. Unfortunately, it can't be easy for them to succeed in achieving their goal. So, think of what they want, and make it hard for them to get it.

A great tip that can also be used is to create characters that are polar opposites. Let their personalities naturally clash as the story unfolds, and this can create another conflict your main character has to deal with.

When your character gets close to reaching their goal, make it even harder. I find that giving your character a difficult decision, where neither choice may be the right or easy choice, really amps up the tension and conflict. This can be your climax point.

Hopefully, these few short tips help! In a future blog, I'll go more in-depth on internal and external conflicts, and give examples! Happy writing <3
