Romance Tropes That Always Come Out on Top

As an avid romance reader, I am such a big fan of tropes that make my heart flutter. There are so many unique tropes as new books come along and introduce new plots and ideas of romance. Let's discuss some popular romance tropes!

Enemies To Lovers

Where the two main characters start out hating each other. Whether this is from past events or an ongoing event. Their hatred slowly turns to lust and love as they move past the anger.

Friends To Lovers

The two main characters have been friends for a long time, and have long denied their attraction, or realize as time goes on that they are attracted to each other. This could also be when childhood friends reunite as adults, and start to fall for each other.

Small Town

In a rural, small town, a chance encounter between two characters leads to romance. In this trope, the community is usually very tightly knit, and this form of proximity leads the characters to grow closer.

Sunny vs Grumpy

Just as it sounds, one character has a sunny and optimistic personality while the other is moody and grumpy. Usually in these tropes, the sunshine character slowly breaks down the grumpy character's walls.

Fake Relationship

One main character has to save their image/position by having a spouse. A fake arrangement unearths a genuine connection between the two characters that grows into something more.

Best Friend’s Sibling

The main character falls in love with their best friend's sibling. They hide their feelings because they don't want to upset their friend, or the sibling their in love with is older/a bad boy.

First Love

Reunited after becoming adults, usually the main character will fall back in love with their first love the more they interact.

Forbidden Love

Whether it's family, class, or culture issues, there are forces that can keep a couple from being together. In this trope, the main characters are persuaded by outside factors and conflicting emotions to remain apart.

Forced Proximity

The two main characters are stuck together in a confined space and find themselves growing closer due to the proximity. Some examples of this could be being snowed in, stuck in a room, or trapped somewhere.

Which trope is your favorite? Enemies-to-lovers and small town romances have always been some of my favorites! <3 Happy Saturday!
