This will be a short blog, but I wanted to share something that has stuck with me. This advice was from a college professor whose class I was taking, and even today I think about this tiny piece of wisdom often.
Write Shitty First Drafts
I've mentioned this countless times in previous blogs, but why is it such an important principle to follow as an author? Well, that's because as a writer, sometimes we can get stuck. We focus so hard on making every sentence pretty and perfect. We worry about typos and try to fix them as we write our stories. The only thing this does is slow us down.
Drafts exist for a reason!
No one is going to read your first draft unless you want them to, so make it as shitty as you want! Add blurbs, and shortcut dialogue, and leave notes for yourself that can be taken care of later. The point is, that this first draft is not made to be pretty. It is made to be messy, and may not make sense yet. That is what a second, third, or even fourth draft is for.
This has always been something I try to follow. More often than not, I get stuck trying to add minute details, and that can put me at a standstill in the story. Even now I don't follow this advice to a T, but when I do, I notice that I get more done.
Try it out, and leave any comments about the best writing advice you've received! Happy weekend my loves <3
