Where do you write? Some people like to write at home, choosing a comfy spot at their desk or couch to write. Others may find solace in coffee shops or parks. Where do you like to write?
Today, I'll be introducing you to my writing space (pictured below)!
You'll find me here on most days, in the corner of my room, with the sunshine dripping in through the windows, either standing or tucked into a chair. This is where most of my writing has gotten done since I got a computer.
It didn't always look this way. What is now a standing desk used to be an old dresser, stained with nail polish and other miscellaneous liquids I spilled as a kid. Now, I like to keep my work area as clean as possible. Here is how I set up my writing space:
Location
As someone who is mostly desk-bound, it is so important that my desk rests under sunlight. In the corner of my room, where the only two windows are, sits my workspace. In the mornings, I get a lot of natural light, which makes me feel better, and gives me more light if I need to write something down on paper. As a poet, it also allows me to watch the everyday activities of my neighbors, the sun setting, and the sky changing colors. On rainy days I can be close to the thrum, and open the windows when I need a much-needed break from the AC.
Although not everyone will agree, I think it's good to have something else to look at. As you can see, I have multiple monitors, so looking out and letting my mind wander for a few moments is therapeutic.
Setup
My laptop (Lenovo) is connected to two Dell monitors. I have a wired mouse that I'd gotten as a gift, and although I usually prefer wireless, it does the job perfectly fine. I also have a mousepad and phone stand, and also two very thoughtful gifts. At the time of this picture, I had a few books at the corner of my desk (the books pictured here are The Scars We Choose parts 1 and 2), but if you replace that with a 60oz water bottle, that's pretty much all I have on my desk daily.
As for the wall, I like to sometimes stick important memos to the wall because I'm prone to forgetting things like that. I also have 2 pairs of over-the-ear headphones hanging from each side of my desk. One is mostly for gaming/video all purposes, as it has a mic attached to it, and the other is for when I need some music/ambiance.
Keeping stuff off my desk has helped immensely with my work and writing process. I have fewer things to look at, and my eyes are limited to wandering from screen-to-screen, or outside the window. I also choose backgrounds based on anime and games that I love, to inspire me whenever I look at my desktop. Your writing space should be authentically you, somewhere where you can be yourself and let your creativity grow and spread. I hope that you enjoyed learning this little piece of my world ❤️
