Writing Fantasy That is Believable

Ever since I could read, I've been a fan of fantastical worlds. Done right, fantasy can create an alluring atmosphere that makes you believe that everything within can happen. To get it right, there are a few quick tips that can help you create a believable world.

Do Your Research

You can do this in a multitude of ways. My favorite way to research fantasy is to grab my favorite fantasy novel and read (or re-read). Make note of things you notice about the world, the character, the rules of magic, and how the following contribute to the story. What makes it so enamoring and believable?

Set Rules (Even for Exceptions)

Although magic is considered an exception to the rules, magic should also have its own rules. This makes the magic and fantastical occurrences more believable, as different characters can have different kinds of magic or different capabilities.

In some cases, you may want to make your main character, or a main character more powerful. If you do, make rules even for the exception to the world's general rules.

Be Consistent

Make sure that whatever set of rules you choose, you keep them consistent. One of the biggest things that can throw a reader off, is inconsistency. You hear this with injuries and quirks, but it also applies to magic.

Outline Everything

Make a spreadsheet! It never hurts to keep a list of things you don't want to lose track of. This can include an outline for characters, setting, plot, magic, etc. Outlining can also help you to think about where you want your story to go, and what factors can lead it down the right path.

Hopefully, these quick tips can help you to create a believable and fantastic story. Happy Saturday loves <3
